We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: the German edition of Vogue simply isn’t what it once was. Under the tutelage of Kerstin Weng (who has served as head of editorial content since 2021), the magazine has been extremely hit and miss (heavy on the miss, FYI). Covers over recent months starring the likes of Tilda Swinton, Emilia Schüle, Emma Corrin, Heike Makatsch, and Sandra Hüller have flopped HARD. Weng appears to be trying to make amends, however, by inviting Nadja Auermann onto the cover of Vogue Germany for May 2025. The iconic German model (once stated by the Guinness Book of Records to have the longest legs of any model in the world) appears before the lens of photographer Scott Trindle. In the stripped-back cover shot, Auermann appears makeup-free wearing a cream jacket from the Marni Spring 2025 collection.

“QUEEN! I don’t speak German, but the title should be THE BEST MODEL IN THE WORLD!” exclaimed DK92 upon checking out the cover.

“I LOVE Nadja Auermann and I’m delighted to see this!” VanillaCrush exclaimed.

Also very much a fan was vogue28. “Nadja Auermann on the cover of Vogue Germany feels like a cause for celebration! So glad the team never did anything crazy in terms of concept. Just a beautiful cover photograph of a beautiful woman with zero gimmicks,” he shared.

Not everyone, however, was feeling it. “Nadja is one my all time faves. She’s the ultimate ‘femme fatale’ model. Her kilometer-long legs, the piercing blue eyes, the icy blond bob, the razor sharp cheekbones… That’s why I don’t care for this mature woman styling. Gimme full on Helmut Newton fantasy!” wrote Marc10.

“Love Nadja but the cover is hideous. She looks tired,” commented forum member Avonlea.

We’ve made no attempt to hide our feelings toward Vogue Germany of late. After all, the magazine is now a shadow of its former self. Currently installed at the top job within the German fashion title is Kestin Weng, who over recent months has invited Emilia Schüle, Emma Corrin, Heike Makatsch, Sandra Hüller, and Devyn Garcia as cover stars. Weng, who has served as head of editorial content since 2021, welcomes Tilda Swinton onto the cover of Vogue Germany for April 2025. Photographed outside the Boros Collection museum in Berlin, the British actress poses for photographer Roman Goebel. Swinton, a Chanel brand ambassador, is dressed by stylist Jerry Stafford for the occasion in a look from the Chanel Haute Couture Spring 2025 collection.

“This edition deserves to be killed,” voiced Avonlea upon first look.

Vogue Germany needs to change direction in terms of photography, casting, and design. It is not looking very good,” noted forum members MModa.

“Burn it,” declared marsnoop2.

Also far from overjoyed over German Vogue‘s latest was jjjmmm. “You really have to be mediocre to make even Tilda Swinton look tacky and cheap,” they pointed out.

“Dreadful. They got Tilda, and this is what they decided to do? They had all the tools,” shrieked an unforgiving jeremydante.

Forum member jal718 described the cover as “horrific” but do you agree?

Vogue Germany hasn’t been the same since Christiane Arp departed the title as editor-in-chief in 2020. Kerstin Weng currently serves as the magazine’s head of editorial (a position she’s held since 2021), and covers over recent months just simply haven’t been cutting it. Not even German Vogue covers featuring the likes of Emma Corrin, Heike Makatsch, Sandra Hüller, or Devyn Garcia have managed to impress. Up next on the cover of Vogue Germany is Emilia Schüle, who fronts the March 2025 edition. Photographer Felicity Ingram was called upon to profile the German actress and star of Marie Antoinette, with cover shoot stylist Nathan Klein selecting a look from the Gucci Spring 2025 collection for Schüle to showcase in the eye-catching cover shot.

Liberty33r1b used the word “ridiculous” to describe the cover.

“I always forget that this edition still exists,” Avonlea stated.

“Christiane Arp is laughing so hard right now,” noted forum member Xone.

“This truly has to be the edition of Vogue that’s been most affected by all the changes… like… yikes. It always used to be, at the very least, interesting to look at under Christian Arp,” blueorchid chimed in.

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again: Vogue Germany is a shadow of its former self. Things just aren’t the same and the title has become extremely hit and miss. Throughout 2024, cover stars of the German title included everyone from Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss to Hunter Schafer and Margot Friedländer. Kerstin Weng, who has served as head of editorial content since 2021, commences 2025 by welcoming Emma Corrin as a Vogue Germany cover star. The English actor poses before the lens of photographer Samuel Bradley amongst a playful set. Complete with styling from Harry Lambert, the Miu Miu brand ambassador is, of course, dressed in a look from the brand’s Spring 2025 collection in the quirky cover photograph.

“Oh God,” exclaimed Kimy Jo immediately upon checking out the cover.

“When you want to book Jamie Hawkesworth but you don’t have the budget,” stated a majorly underwhelmed helmutnotdead.

“And just when you thought it couldn’t get worse, they publish this. OMG!” voiced liberty33r1b.

Also quick to disapprove was vogue28. “The best Emma Corrin has ever looked on the cover of a fashion magazine is still Issue Magazine S/S 2021. Not a single cover has come close. Emma just gives us nothing when posing for fashion magazines. The amateur photography and juvenile set doesn’t help matters here either,” they pointed out.

“I feel like this edition has had the worst downfall. I forget it exists,” shared blueorchid.

Like most other Euro editions of Vogue, Vogue Germany has become a shadow of its former self over recent years. However, under the direction of current head of editorial content Kerstin Weng, the German fashion bible has been planted firmly on our radar throughout 2024. After all, covers starring the likes of Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Hunter Schafer, and Karolina Spakowski have piqued our interest to no end. Weng also made a major statement this year, welcoming Margot Friedländer (a 102-year-old Holocaust survivor) onto the cover. Heike Makatsch is welcomed onto the December cover of Vogue Germany, helping the magazine close the chapter on 2024. Shot by Noémi Ottilia Szabo, the German actress poses amongst the wilderness down by the waterfront and poses in a look from the Chanel Fall 2024 collection.

“I do not know who this person is as I have never seen her before. The cover is not exciting to look at as it is average-looking. I want to see a beautiful German model like Anna Ewers on the cover again,” sighed MModa.

“It’s a forced smile. Not for me,” voiced forum member oaklee91.

“Not interested,” shared jeremydante. “But hope this is meaningful for their region’s readers!”

We don’t know where you’ve been if you weren’t aware Condé Nast share content across various publications under their roster. Vogue is certainly no exception. Throughout 2024 alone, Vogue Germany has repurposed shoots starring the likes of Adut Akech, Kate Moss, Hunter Schafer, and Devyn Garcia. Fresh from celebrating 40 years of print with Sandra Hüller, Kerstin Weng plucks a story from the November 2024 issue of British Vogue for this month’s Vogue Germany offering. Karolina Spakowski becomes a Vogue Germany cover girl in the process. Photographed by Charlotte Wales and with styling from Harry Lambert, the German beauty poses out in the great outdoors, surrounded by silk Hermès scarves and sporting a look from the French fashion house in the cover shot.

“A beautiful cover featuring Karolina Spakowski. Love the placement of the Hermès scarves, autumn colors, the styling, and the outdoor photography. Spakowski has the perfect stare and is a natural beauty. It is definitely one of the best covers published this season thus far. Bravo!” applauded MModa.

“Gorgeous cover and editorial. Karolina with the orange Vogue masthead is a match made in heaven,” shared forum member crmsn.

“This is actually quite creative with how they used the Hermès scarves on the clothesline, I like it,” Drusilla chimed in.

Tigerrouge pointed out: “This is the Charlotte Wales story that’s also in British and Spanish Vogue!”

“This whole reprint/sharing strategy Condé Nast still insists upon is so unfortunate. However, on this occasion, I believe Vogue Germany made good use out of a repurposed cover shoot. The art direction works. I like the orange masthead, the layout, and the fact it’s Karolina Spakowski on the cover,” vogue28 voiced.

Fresh from Vogue Italia commemorating its 60th anniversary with a series of celebratory Steven Meisel-shot covers, Vogue Germany is marking 45 years of print. Throughout 2024, the title’s Head of Editorial Content Kerstin Weng has welcomed the likes of Peggy Gou, Claudia Schiffer, Adut Akech, Kate Moss, Hunter Schafer, and made history by welcoming 102-year-old Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer onto the cover. Weng adds Sandra Hüller as Vogue Germany cover star to mark the magazine’s 45th anniversary for October 2024. Famed German photographer Juergen Teller was called upon to photograph the German actress, who gazes down Teller’s lens sat perched on some steps. In the cover shot, Hüller is dressed by stylist Poppy Kain wearing a head-to-toe look from Nicolas Ghesquière’s 10-year Louis Vuitton collection for Fall 2024.

Also in a state of shock was vogue28. “A 45th anniversary issue and we get this glum-looking cover? What on Earth! I’m into a German subject like Sandra Hüller gracing such an issue. The outcome, however, is a disappointment. I dislike Juergen Teller’s work at the best of times. This is one of those times in which I loathe his work,” he voiced.

As a result of Anna Wintour installed as Condé Nast’s global content advisor, we’ve become completely accustom to Vogues across the world sharing content. Kate Moss, for example, made the cover of Vogue not once but three times (across Vogue Germany, Vogue Taiwan and Vogue Japan) over the months of May and June – each assembled from the same Nikolai von Bismarck shoot. The latest to be shared is Vogue Italia’s recent June 2024 cover offering featuring Hunter Schafer photographed by Ethan James Green. At the very least, Vogue Germany’s head of editorial content Kerstin Weng opts for a different cover photograph, than selected by Italian Vogue‘s Francesca Ragazzi. Covering the mag’s June 2024 edition, the American actress, model and red capret style siren showcases a canary yellow creation from Kim Jones’ Spring 2024 Fendi collection, teamed by stylist Dara Allen with heels from Marc Jacobs.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“So Ethan’s kinda merging Steven Meisel goes to LA + Meisel mid 2000s, huh?” asked thiago the moment the cover struck.

“Sort of ‘cool’ shot but it doesn’t work as a cover,” voiced Petrus.

Also not entirely convinced was forum member oaklee91, commenting: “Should’ve chosen some other shot!”

“Looks like she got very dressed up to clean the glass windows and doors,” mocked Gary89.

“This dress looks HORRIBLE, and the shoes don’t even deserve my comment…” critiqued DK92.

MModa, however, disagreed with the majority. “I really like the cover. Hunter Schafer is definitely dressed up for summer. The shoes are funky but somehow they work.”

“Not as… ethereal as Vogue Italia but it’s a solid cover. The composition is the photograph works, especially with Dara Allen’s styling. The Fendi dress and Marc Jacobs shoes are showcased in the best way. It’s all just very easy on the eye. A nice use of a repurposed shoot, if you ask me,” reasoned vogue28.
