Zara 50th Anniversary by Steven Meisel

You might not even need reminding that the partnership between Steven Meisel and Zara has been a match made in absolute fashion heaven. Season after season, campaign after campaign, we have been in constant awe since 2017. In 2023, Zara and the legendary American lensman even teamed up for an exclusive collaboration, and the accompanying campaign featured the absolute who’s who of the modeling world. Therefore, it is no surprise to see Marta Ortega Pérez enlist Steven Meisel for the Zara 50th anniversary campaign. To commemorate five decades since the first Zara store in A Coruña, Spain in 1975, Meisel captures 50 of fashion’s finest for the 50th anniversary campaign – resulting in a stark black and white portrait of the women.

Those names include: Abbey Lee, Adriana Lima, Alek Wek, Amar Akway, Amber Valletta, Amelia Gray, Awar Odhiang, Candice Swanepoel, Carla Bruni, Caroline Trentini, Carolyn Murphy, Christy Turlington, Cindy Crawford, Doutzen Kroes, Edie Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Fei Fei Sun, Georgia Palmer, He Cong, Imaan Hammam, Irina Shayk, Iselin Steiro, Joan Smalls, Julia Nobis, Karen Elson, Karlie Kloss, Lexi Boling, Lina Zhang, Linda Evangelista, Liya Kebede, Lulu Tenney, Mariacarla Boscono, Marisa Berenson, Maty Fall, Meghan Collison, Mona Tougaard, Naomi Campbell, Natasha Poly, Paloma Elsesser, Paulina Porizkova, Penelope Tree, Precious Lee, Rianne van Rompaey, Rosalieke Fuchs, Sascha Rajasalu, Sasha Pivovarova, Sora Choi, Twiggy, Vittoria Ceretti, and Yasmin Warsame.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Such large group photographs have no impact on me. It is way too much to look at all at once. I much prefer individual fashion shots,” MModa voiced.

“Casting is great but the result is the same as Edward Enninful’s farewell British Vogue cover. Boring AF,” critiqued thiago.

Also not exactly jumping for joy was fashionsavvvvy. “Damn, a HUGE letdown,” they declared.

“Steven Meisel’s work has meant everything to me for decades, but I feel like I’ve seen this type of model group shot enough times before, to not be moved by the sight of it in 2025,” tigerrouge chimed in.

In complete agreement was svpernova: “I’m pretty disappointed by this. They have some of the most prominent models of all time, and they decide to use a group shot?”

“Predictable casting,” noted Gonzalo.

“As expected. Lots of fillers. No Top girls like Vodianova or Bündchen?” asked MagFan.

Throughout 2024, we’ve given our approval to covers starring everyone from Sofia Coppola to Mona Tougaard. M Le Magazine du Monde‘s ‘Spécial Mode‘ issue for the Fall 2024 season is here, and the publication is celebrating all-things Dutch talent for the occasion. The magazine’s creative director Jean-Baptiste Talbourdet-Napoleone is enlisted as cover shoot photographer. The celebratory shoot pays tribute to the people and culture of the Netherlands. A whole rooster of Dutch wonders become cover stars in the process, including Imaan Hammam, Rianne van Rompaey and Doutzen Kroes (among a multitude of others).

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“Incredible! Amazing! Will definitely try to get my hands on this issue, preferably with Doutzen or Imaan on the cover!” shared forum member WAVES.

“Glorious covers with Imaan and Rianne on the beach and a generally lovely editorial set in Amsterdam and beyond. I would love to get either of those covers!” Fiercification chimed in.

“Fabulous! It reminds of great times spent in Amsterdam, which is always a good idea,” enthused thiago.

Also very much a fan was vogue28: “What a fine display of Dutch talent. Jean-Baptiste Talbourdet-Napoleone did a wonderful job. Doutzen, Rianne and Imaan look spectacular, love each of their covers – especially Imaan in that Alaia. The closeup cover with Rianne is absolutely mesmerizing, it’s divine!”

Vogue Netherlands September 2024 : Doutzen Kroes by Lachlan Bailey

We absolutely live for modeling comebacks here at theFashionSpot. Whether it’s Daria Werbowy staging a mini comeback in a Gucci campaign or Linda Evangelista having a massive resurgence within the industry – we’ll take it. Doutzen Kroes is the latest to stage somewhat of a comeback. First came a cover of D la Repubblica earlier this year, in addition to Doutzen closing out Chemena Kamali‘s debut Chloé collection during the recent Fall 2024 season of Paris Fashion Week. Now, the Dutch beauty cements her comeback by making an appearance on the September 2024 cover of Vogue Netherlands. Shot on location on the island of Ibiza, Doutzen gazes down the lens of photographer Lachlan Bailey. Doutzen (who began her modeling career in 2003) is styled by Geraldine Saglio and sports an oversized faux fur Dsquared2 hat in the cover shot.

Read below the reactions of theFashionSpot’s forum members:

“LOVE HER and LOVE the cover!” immediately exclaimed BalkaniStaCouture.

“Great cover, quite impactful. I love the gaze and the hat she’s wearing,” Srdjan admired.

“One of my most favorite of the September covers this year, without a shadow of a doubt. Massively here for the comeback of Doutzen Kroes. The fact Lachlan Bailey photographed this and Geraldine Saglio styled the shoot is just an added bonus. Absolutely love the cover shot, love the colors, the minimal art direction and the Dsquared2 hat,” raved vogue28.

“I am immensely happy to see Doutzen again and on a beautiful cover! She is a COVER GIRL and I want more Vogue covers with her,” DK92 shared.

Not everyone, however, was so forthcoming. “Absolutely abysmal,” described lanvinray.

“It has been ages since Doutzen Kroes has done something interesting as a model. Always the same face and that ‘Mother Earth’ styling bullsh*t,” avonlea002 critiqued.

A whopping 21 covers feature models Rianne van Rompaey, Saskia de Brauw, Malgosia Bela, Adwoa Aboah, Natalia Vodianova, Karen Elson, Raquel Zimmermann, Linda Evangelista, Julia Nobis, Doutzen Kroes, Carolyn Murphy, Guinevere van Seenus, Imaan Hammam, Emily Ratajkowski, Devyn Garcia, Kiki Willems, Lily Kebede, Deva Cassel, Anja Rubik, Edie Campbell and Mica Argañaraz. “Wow, there’s not a single bad cover! Loving them all. Malgosia’s is my favorite, though. Stellar casting,” applauded forum member thiago.

Fiercification commented: “Robin Galiegue is the don! Finally a new photographer who understands fashion. All the covers are wonderful but I’d have to go with Malgosia, Adwoa or Karen I reckon.”

“Amazing covers. The styling is super sharp and elegant,” admired Alquimista.

“Completely blown away, just like everyone else, over how fantastic each and every cover is! So much beauty, so much splendor and so much fabulosity. Almost an impossible task to pick just one favorite and I wouldn’t even know where to start,” enthused vogue28.

WSJ Magazine June/July 2020 : Doutzen Kroes by Annemarieke Van Drimmelen

is currently one of the hottest magazines out there. It constantly delivers great content and brilliant covers starring the likes of Nicole Kidman, Adut Akech and Rebecca Leigh Longendyke. Now Doutzen Kroes graces the publication’s double June/July 2020 outing captured by photographer Annemarieke van Drimmelen. Decked out in Chanel courtesy of Tonne Goodman, Doutzen is the epitome of calmness and tranquility in the captivating cover image.

The cover definitely sparked debate on our forums. “It’s really somber for summer but beautiful!” admired SophiaVB.

“It’s chic, not very joyful… Almost monastic but very chic. It’s good to see that side of Tonne,” approved Lola701.

“Beautiful in a sad way. Reminds me in a way of ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ by Johannes Vermeer,” Nymphaea pointed out.

“A beautiful cover shot of Doutzen, very serene and rather melancholic. There’s also a sense of peace, calmness and tranquility, which I believe is something we can all appreciate given our current circumstance across the globe. No complaints here,” praised vogue28.

“What a fine editorial. Serene and monastic indeed and extremely chic. Makes you appreciate this magazine that much more,” said dodencebt.

“The cover story is precious, Doutzen looks flawless in all the photos and Tonne produced amazing work,” raved burbuja8910.

Vogue Japan March 2020 by Luigi & Iango

We’ve been experiencing a Vogue Japan by Luigi & Iango drought since last August, but a little rain has finally come our way with the unveiling of the mag’s March 2020 issue. The photographic duo has been behind some of Japanese Vogue‘s best covers over recent years complete with cover stars like Kim Kardashian, Kaia Gerber, Namie Amuro and Gisele Bündchen. For March, the title gives us all the models we can handle with Adriana Lima, Candice Swanepoel, Joan Smalls, Edita Vilkeviciute, Doutzen Kroes and Sui He making up the cast each wearing a look from Stella McCartney’s Spring 2020 collection (picked by Anna Dello Russo) surrounded by a floral illustration by Thierry Perez.

But the cover didn’t hit the spot for our forum members. “This looks like a horrible fan-designed cover. The lost potential…” proclaimed Nomar.

“Well that’s a letdown,” added marsnoop2.

“Oh, it’s way too busy. I can’t even look at it for long,” said whippie.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“I think it’s hilarious that Luigi & Iango shot this for an ‘All Natural’ cover. Nothing screams ‘natural’ more than a bunch of Photoshopped supermodels with bleached eyebrows,” mocked mikel.

Marc10 shared the same sentiment: “It’s always astonishing how they manage to suck every bit of personality from the models and turn them into plastic clones.”

“Looks like a snake pit of supermodels,” declared tigerrouge.

“Everything is far too clashy. Why not just give us a portrait shot of one girl (Edita!) and call it a day. The only one who benefits from this cover is the brand because those dresses are all in full view,” called out Benn98.

The accompanying cover feature is a total must-see. Check it out and share your thoughts here.

US Elle July 2019 : Gisele Bündchen, Naomi Campbell, Doutzen Kroes & Anja Rubik by Chris Colls

Unfortunately, we rarely see models on the covers of mainstream American fashion magazines nowadays so our forum members rejoice whenever an editor is brave enough to pick a model for their cover. Nina Garcia gets a round of applause for bestowing upon us not one, but FOUR model covers for ELLE‘s July 2019 edition. Bringing awareness to causes close to their hearts, we welcome Gisele Bündchen, Naomi Campbell, Doutzen Kroes and Anja Rubik down at the newsstand, each starring on solo covers all photographed by Chris Colls.

Despite the killer lineup, our forum members weren’t cheering. “How can you take people with such unbelievable faces and bodies and make them look so bad?” asked an underwhelmed tigerrouge.

“OMG, there’s not even one good cover here… How is it even possible?” questioned KissMiss.

“They should work, but all of them fall flat! I can’t understand why, but I just really don’t like any of them. Doutzen looks weird and the colors are so drab for July,” said 333101.

StylishDreaming wasn’t feeling them, either. “So much wasted potential. The only cover I truly enjoy is Gisele’s. Anja comes close, but like someone already pointed out, she just looks sad and pitiful.”

But the covers did have a few fans. “Fantastic, love them all, but cut above is the Gisele shot! She just delivers, and understands her brand 100%! U.S. ELLE is really making me miss the old Vogue less!” approved Miss Dalloway.

“Nina is not playing! Go girl!” applauded Lola701.

“I absolutely love this! Love the cast and the causes!” admired KateTheGreatest.

While we expect over-the-top looks at the Met Gala, attendees at the annual CFDA Fashion Awards tend to play it safe(r). But that didn’t stop Ashley Graham from stealing everybody’s thunder decked out in a structured-shoulder Christian Siriano black dress and matching hat.

Officially now a fashion icon, Jennifer Lopez showed off her abs in a bedazzled crop top and corresponding maxi skirt, both custom Ralph Lauren Collection. The Hadid sisters also turned heads with Gigi sporting a cornflower blue look from Louis Vuitton, while Bella went disco glam in Michael Kors Collection. (We also must give a shout-out to Ciara, who rocked a custom Vera Wang ensemble.)

Cannes is known for grand gowns and this year, celebrities really upped the stakes. From dresses so big they needed their own zip code to blinding bling in the form of necklaces, cuffs and earrings, there was so much to take in at every premiere. And there were plenty of structured silhouettes, especially when it came to jumpsuits. (We even spotted a pair of rompers on the red carpet.) But the biggest star of this year’s festival was Elle Fanning. The youngest jury member in the event’s history, the actress really went for it each and every time she set foot on the red carpet. And we appreciate all the effort the 21-year-old put into her appearances. In case you weren’t glued to your computer to check out all the premiere looks, we went ahead and put them together in one handy-dandy slideshow. You can thank us later.

Vogue Netherlands May 2019 : Doutzen Kroes by Daniel Jackson

You might find it hard to believe that Vogue Netherlands celebrates its 100th issue after launching in 2012. Over the years, our forums have encountered a love/hate relationship with the publication, going head-over-heels for Karlie Kloss, Natasha Poly and Imaan Hammam covers while casting a critical eye toward covers with Gigi Hadid, Bette Franke and Birgit Kos. For May 2019, Vogue Netherlands welcomes back Doutzen Kroes for a ninth time, photographed by Daniel Jackson and styled by George Cortina sitting nonchalantly in a black Isabel Marant bathing suit for what should have felt like a momentous and celebratory occasion.

For the occasion, expectations on our forums were high — and rightly so. “This is amateurish! Between Doutzen and Daniel Jackson they could have done SO much more,” scoffed a disapproving KateTheGreatest.

“Why is it so hard for them to do a decent cover these days? They used to be so much more fun in their choices, but now it’s all so try-hard,” Miss Dalloway exclaimed.

[ Not a tFS forum member yet? Click here to join! ]

“I’ll never understand how these international editions allow subpar work on their covers from photographers and stylists who can deliver something great. What a waste of money,” echoed an equally underwhelmed Benn98.

In complete agreement was vogue28: “Dumbfounded over how amateurish this is, and aside from the fact it’s Doutzen Kroes on the cover, I do not find this very celebratory at all for a 100th issue. Daniel Jackson can produce way better work than this, had to triple check it was even photographed by him!”

“In my eyes, Vogue NL hardly ever produces a decent cover, so in a way, this IS celebrating what they’re all about,” laughed tigerrouge.

Mikel wasn’t here for the unfortunate outcome either. “What a waste of talent and resources,” he stated.

“Doutzen deserves better!” declared DK92.
